History

The Centro Federal de Educação Tecnológica Celso Suckow da Fonseca (Cefet/RJ) had its origin in 1917 as Escola Normal de Artes e Ofícios Wenceslau Braz. Currently, it is a federal educational institution that is understood as a public space for human, scientific, and technological training. It offers technical programs integrated to high school, subsequent (post-high school), technological, undergraduate and graduate programs (including masters’ and doctorate degrees), both in person and at distance.

Cefet/RJ works on teaching, research, and extension, and it aims to contribute to the training of professionals for the economic and social development of mesoregions in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Since the expansion of the federal technical and technological education network, the institution has had the Maracanã main campus and seven more campuses throughout the state, which are in: Angra dos Reis, Itaguaí, Maria da Graça, Nova Friburgo, Nova Iguaçu, Petrópolis, and Valença.

Colégio Pedro II

History

Founded in 1837, Colégio Pedro II is one of the most traditional public institutions of basic education in Brazil. Throughout its history, it was responsible for the training of students who stood out for their professional careers and influence in society. In its more than 180 years, the College has gone through periods of expansion and modernization without neglecting the characteristics that has made it a reference in the Brazilian educational scenario.

Similar to the Federal Institutes of Education, Science and Technology, Colégio Pedro II has 14 campuses, 12 in the city of Rio de Janeiro, one in Niterói, and one in Duque de Caxias, as well as a Reference Center in Early Childhood Education, located in Realengo.
With more than 12 thousand students, Colégio Pedro II offers Child Education, Elementary Education, Regular and Integrated High School, Youth and Adult Education (Proeja), in addition to graduate programs.

Fundação Centro Universitário Estadual da Zona Oeste – UEZO

History

Fundação Centro Universitário Estadual da Zona Oeste (UEZO) is a public institution, created with the goal of training professionals at a higher level to meet the demand of the job market in RJ. The location of UEZO was strategically designed, located in Campo Grande, in the center of the largest industrial district in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro. Its main objective is to implement alternatives for solving existing technological problems through applied research with the generation of new products, contributing to economic growth and the strengthening of technology policies in the region.

The creation of UEZO was intended to encourage and provide the poor region of the state with quality technological and scientific training, providing development and professional qualification to its residents, producers, and local industries, raising their quality of life and allowing compatibility with others regions of the state, as well as expanding and offering higher education, thus allowing its access to the interested population.

Fundação Oswaldo Cruz – Fiocruz

History

Fiocruz is the main non-university institution for the training and qualification of personnel for the Unified Health System (SUS) and for the area of science and technology in health in Brazil. Its students come from all regions of the country and also from abroad, especially from Latin America and Portuguese-speaking Africa.

Its programs are offered at the various Units of Fiocruz, at the graduate level – masters’ and doctorate degrees with academic and professional programs; specialization degrees and residency (medical and multiprofessional); Professional Education: initial, continued, and Technical Training of Middle Level and Education of Youth and Adults.

History

The Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia do Rio de Janeiro (IFRJ) was created by Law No. 11,892, of December 29, 2008 by transformation of the then Federal Center for Technological Education of Chemistry in Nilópolis (CEFETQ). In the same legal provision, the Colégio Agrícola Nilo Peçanha (CANP-UFF) was incorporated into the new institution, becoming a campus.

IFRJ is multi-disciplinary and multicampus of Basic and Higher Education, specialized in offering professional and technological education in different modalities, in research, innovation and extension, enjoying university autonomy.

Instituto Federal Fluminense – IFFluminense

History

The History of IFFluminense began in the last century, with former President Nilo Peçanha, who created (with Decree No. 7.566/1909) the Escolas de Aprendizes Artífices, with the purpose of educating and providing job opportunities for young people from less favored classes. In 1945, the school was renamed the Escola Técnica Federal de Campo (with Decree nº 4.073/1942), allowing the continuation of studies on vocational training at high-school level. According to Law no. 9,394/1996, in relation to the teaching reform resulting from the Lei de Diretrizes e Bases, in 1998, the School implemented its first HE program in Technology in Data Processing. In 1999, the Technical School was renamed the Centro Federal de Educação Tecnológica de Campos. In the process of expanding Professional and Technological Education, the Federal Government instituted the Rede Federal de Educação Profissional, Científica e Tecnológica and created the Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia Fluminense (Law No. 11,892 / 2008).

Currently IFFluminense is present in 11 municipalities in the state, with 12 campuses, an Innovation Pole, a Reference Center for Technology, Information and Communication in Education and the Rectory, bringing together 18,051 students, 945 lecturers, and 713 technical-administrative staff (data from 2019). Its distribution in the state occurs in the metropolitan region (in Itaboraí and Maricá), in the Baixadas Litorânea, in Cabo Frio and in the Norte Fluminense (Campos dos Goytacazes, São João da Barra, Quissamã and Macaé) and in the Northwest Fluminense (Bom Jesus do Itabapoana, Itaperuna, Cambuci and Santo Antônio de Pádua). The IFF has 79 technical programs, both on-campus and distance learning, 32 HE programs, including technologists, bachelors’ and licensure programs, 15 specialization degree programs, 7 professional master’s degree program and 1 Professional Doctorate.

History

The Instituto Militar de Engenharia (IME) is an educational institution responsible, within the scope of the Brazilian Army, for higher education in engineering and basic research.

It offers undergraduate programs, graduate programs, and university extension courses both for the military and for civilians. It is part of the Army’s Science and Technology System, cooperating with other institutions, through the provision of services and the execution of activities of a technical-scientific nature. Universidade Estadual do Norte Fluminense Darcy Ribeiro – UENF

History

The Universidade Estadual do Norte Fluminense arises from the process of expanding public and free education to the country side of the state of RJ. Leonel Brizola, newly installed governor, put in place the implementation of UENF in 1991, delegating to Professor Darcy Ribeiro the task of designing the model and coordinating the implementation.

Darcy Ribeiro’s University of the Third Millennium was made up of thematic and multidisciplinary laboratories as a cell of academic life. Such a structure remains till today. UENF was also one of the pioneering institutions in offering distance-learning undergraduate programs, being responsible, in early 2002, for the first distance-learning undergraduate program (in Biology) implemented in the country.

Universidade Federal Fluminense – UFF

History

The Universidade Federal Fluminense was created in 1960, as a result of the incorporation of the Federal Schools of Pharmacy, Dentistry and Law (1912), Medicine (1926), and Veterinary Medicine (1936). UFF’s mission is to produce, disseminate and apply knowledge and culture in a critical and socially referenced manner. The institution has academic units in Niterói and in eight municipalities in the country side of the State of RJ – Angra dos Reis, Campos dos Goytacazes, Macaé, Nova Friburgo, Petrópolis, Rio das Ostras, Santo Antônio de Pádua, and Volta Redonda. In addition to on-campus teaching, UFF offers distance education in 28 cities, including its headquarters in Niterói.

UFF also has 29 libraries, 580 laboratories, 21 auditoriums, the Hospital Universitário Antônio Pedro (HUAP), a University Pharmacy, a Veterinary Hospital, a Day Care Center and an elementary and a high school institution. We also have an experimental center in Iguaba Grande, a School Farm in Cachoeiras de Macacu and an Advanced Unit in Oriximiná, in the state of Pará. In addition to a publisher and 4 bookstores, in the cultural area UFF has an Arts Center, composed of a cinema, a theater, an art gallery, and a photography space. In music, we have an orchestra, an old music ensemble, a choir, and a string quartet.

The Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ), headquartered in the state of RJ, originates from the Escola Superior de Agricultura e Medicina Veterinária (ESAMV), created in 1910. Member of the system of Federal Institutions of Higher Education (IFES) and linked to the Higher Education Secretariat of the Ministry of Education (Sesu-MEC), UFRRJ offers vacancies in 56 on-campus undergraduate programs, 2 distance undergraduate programs, 34 graduate programs, including professional masters’; and academic master’s and doctorate degree programs.

The university has four campuses — Seropédica, Nova Iguaçu (Multidisciplinary Institute/IM), Campos dos Goytacazes (CCG) and Três Rios (Três Rios Institute/ITR) — which meet the growing demand for public higher education in the country and, more specifically, in regions furthest from the big centers, such as the western metropolitan region of the city of Rio de Janeiro, Baixada Fluminense and regions of the Middle Paraíba and the Costa Verde Sul in the state of Rio de Janeiro.
